Yo! Skrev en till text om icke binära kön i skolan som jag tänkte att jag skulle dela. Den här är på engelska bara så att ni vet och det är typ bara intervjuer med folk :3

Tryck här för att visa! What do people actually know about non binary pronouns?

It’s becoming more and more accepted to have another gender than the two binary ones, that is why I decided to take a trip to Kunskapsskolan, Fruängen to find out what students actually know about non binary pronouns.

Our society is getting more and more accepting of people who don’t identify within the gender binary but there is still a long way to go, for example there are way too few people who even know what a gender neutral pronoun is or how to use them.

In english there are a few gender neutral pronouns but a lot of people are unsure of how and when to use them. The most common one is “singular they”. By that I don’t mean that you say “Singular they said you look nice,”, no what I mean is that you refer to one person as “they”. So “They have really nice hair,” or “I really like them,”. This might be confusing at first but when you are used to it it doesn’t sound weird at all, in fact if you speak a lot of english you probably do this all the time you just donät think about it. There are also a few “made up” pronouns which people use, one of them is ze/hir which would be used like this: “Ze has asked me out,” or “I really like hir,” or “I really like hirs bag”. You could exchange Ze with he or she, hir with him or her and hirs with his or hers.

It’s a sunny day at the school, some kids are playing ball outside in the sun. Upon entering the building i see some students running to get to class and some others sitting in the cafeteria working on their computers. I sit down at one of the tables and ask the students if they would like to be a part of my article. I get a few of them agrees and this is their thoughts on non binary genders and non binary pronouns.

Have you used nonbinary pronouns? When do you use them and do you ask about people’s pronouns?

“Yes, I have used non binary pronouns before, mainly singular they. I mostly use it when you don’t know the person's gender when it doesn’t matter. Or of course when the person prefers it over another,” one of the students, Alfred, says. “And no, I don’t normally ask about people's pronouns, but if they would like me to use other pronouns I rely on them telling me,”.

Another student, Tilda, also answered some of my questions: “Yes, I have absolutely used the singular they pronoun. If either they want me to or if I don’t know. No, I don’t ask about pronouns directly but if they tell me something else I will of course use that and if they haven’t told me otherwise I’ll use they,”.

“I usually don’t use they, I mainly use ‘that one’ when it doesn’t matter and I don’t really think it’s important to ask about people's pronouns since it doesn’t matter if you are a girl or boy,” Adam says but then starts to get into a conversation with his friend if he should think it matters. They start talking about if someone is trans or doesn’t identify within the binary maybe you should consider how they feel about it.

“No, I don’t use the pronoun they, I don’t feel it’s necessary because there are only two sexes and I just use the pronoun I see best fit someone's appearance. I mean you never see a passport saying ‘they’ so why should you say that?” Peter says.

Among young people it seems that it’s quite accepted that people don’t always fall into the two binary “boxes” but not all seem to be as open and accepting about it.

The cafeteria is starting to fill up with students, they are playing cards and watching youtube on their phones so I decide to go to lunch I decide to sit down at the teacher's table to get a few interviews with them, asking the same questions I previously asked the students. A murmur fills the dining area when I sit down. The dining area is almost full and everyone seems to enjoy their food and chatting. I sit down next to the french and swedish teacher Ulrika and the swedish teacher Pernilla .

“Yes I do use non binary pronouns when it doesn’t matter what gender the person I am talking about and no I don’t really ask about people’s pronouns but by bringing this up and talking more about it I have become more aware about it,” the teacher Pernilla said.

“No, I don’t often use non binary pronouns but my children do, especially my son but if I would use it it would probably be when I don’t know the person's gender. I don’t ask for people’s pronouns but if they told me they wanted to be referred to with another pronoun I’d of course respect that,” She said and we then proceeded discussing why it’s often more comfortable for someone to get asked about their pronouns rather than having to explain and tell themselves.

I explained that if you ask about someone's pronouns you show that you are including an accepting of that, if you have to “come out” it’s much scarier since you aren’t sure how the person in question is going to respond, if they are going to be really accepting or just reject you and your identity completely. Therefore please ask people about their pronouns and make it the norm so you don’t missgender people.

My last interview was with Ella, she identifies as bigender and prefers the pronouns she/they. “I prefer they and she but most people just use she wich is okay but it would be nice if people switched it up a bit. I rather have people ask about my pronouns rather than that they assume or that I have to ask. People who believe that there only is two genders and you can only fit into one of them are basically denying my existence and my identity. If there only are two genders in this world, what am I? Do I not exist to them? Have I just made up my identity and none of it is real? I think it’s really shitty that the school doesn’t mention non binary genders, to them it seems like there only are boys and girls, which is not true. When the teacher says ‘Alternate boy, girl,’ I never know whether to move or to stay, can I sit wherever I want?”

When I went home I had a clearer view of what people know about non binary gender identities. Most people seem to have accepted that there are people who don’t identify within the gender binary but not many ask about people's pronouns and even fewer consider using non binary pronouns for people they don’t know. I really hope this changes in the future and it becomes the norm to ask about everyone’s pronouns.
